Ural owl [Strix uralensis] - Habichtskauz

Thank you so much for the voting proposal.

Specific features
The ural owl is by a size of 54-61 cm and a span of 115-125 cm the biggest owl of Central Europe. He resembles the tawny owl, nevertheless, is considerably bigger.

Food
The ural owl lives mainly on root voles and other small mammals. Besides birds, amphibians and insects are also carried off. The ural owl is a prowling/stalking hunter. He localises the prey animals still under a 20-30-cm-high snowy cover apparently acoustically.

Living space and occurence.
The ural owl needs vacant lands and close to nature wood. He settles bright old wood supplies, avoids against it big, closed woods. The owl seems above all in Northern Europe (Sweden, Finland, Russia), besides also in the mountains of Southern Europe (Yugoslavia, Romania, Eastern Slovakia). Today he is in Germany only an extremely rare guest. He was settled successfully in the Bavarian Forest again.

Danger of the birds.
The ural owl can reach an age from up to 22 years. On the basis of adjustments and living space change he became extinct in western Central Europe. The owl was an early brood bird in the Bavarian Forest and in the Bohemian Forest as well as in Southern Austria. Nevertheless, in the national park the Bavarian Forest one takes care of his repatriation. In 1989 the first successful physical brood took place there.

Kennzeichen
