The history of this neogothic castle goes back to the 9th century when there was a medieval stronghold on this spot.
The castle is situated at the ‘Old Scheldt’, an old cut-off meander of the river Scheldt. At the end of the 19th. century, it was given its present outlook during restoration works.
Phillips de Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde was a 16th. century prominent Flemish statesman who owned several castles in Flanders and the Netherlands.
He was also a writer and probably the author of the text of the Dutch national anthem, the Wilhelmus. In 1583 he became the Lord Major of Antwerp and the owner of the castle.
Currently, the castle is inhabited by John de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde, the 14th count of this historical family.
A big thanks to fionnghall for the kindly nomination of this picture for the Italian gallery.
A very peaceful and harmonious atmosphere with these wonderful evening light colours. And this atmosphere is still more peaceful and harmonious with the swan. Great!
Wolfgang

The composition of your picture is absolutely great. Excellent with the tree on the one side to give the scene a frame. The colours are superb and the light is perfectly balanced. The warm light of the setting (rising?) sun adds a lot to the atmosphere as well as the "lonesome" swan which gives the whole scene a nice calm mood.
Hallo Mark

Excellently composed, Mark ! Very good use of the foreground to add depth, the tree at the rightside for framing, castle on the rules of thirds and the swan is the bonus this time :-)))
Good details !!
Greetings, Cees
And you lucky fella could capture the swan also in the pond , the brite white gives it that little extra....;-))
Excellent shot my friend.....;-)
Greetings.....

Oh, there is a wonderful atmosphere in this image. The colours are splendid, the castle is so sharp, the light, the swan - very romantic.
greetings, Adele
In Voting:
