Piazza di San Pietro
This masterpiece of architectural town-planing was created in the 17th century by Bernini, the originator of the Baroque style. The open space forms an immence ellipse, curvin inwards and bounded by two semicircles of Doric columns which frame the façade of the church. At the center point of the square stands an Egyptian obelisk high 25,5 m , erected in the Ist century B.C. in honour of Caius Cornelius Gallus, then prefect of Egypt.
The two fountais date from the 17th century. Between them and the obelisk is a circular paving-stone from wich the colonnade appears to consist only of a single row of columns.
