Ernst Hemingway spent a lot of time hearing stories about life on the sea here in the early 20's. Of course this is not the original location of Sloppy Joe’s, the original location is now Capt. Tony's right around the corner.
It seems the landlord raised the rent on the bar and rather than pay more rent they moved. On the last day at the old location the owners and the regular patrons took everything, including a urinal that is at the Hemingway house and moved it to the new location seen here in this picture. Mrs. Hemingway was thrilled to have the urinal as you can imagine but Ernst insisted they keep it since so much of his money went down the drain in it. Mrs. Hemingway covered the outside of it with tile and turned it into part of a fountain.
