Sprinter on the Point

Under the maze of copper catenary, an Amtrak ACS-64 “Sprinter” class electric locomotive
is on the point of a New York-bound Northeast Regional train on this late afternoon.

She’s just pulled out of Washington’s Union Station, so just flexing her muscles for now, but once out of terminal trackage, she’ll live up to her name and dig in for the sprint up the high speed mainline of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor.

The Siemens-built Sprinters are the replacement locomotives for the Swedish designed AEM-7s (*)
which took over from the legendary Pennsylvania Railroad designed GG1s (**) in the early 1980s.
