A polar bear mother mourning her cub

It is difficult to say why the cub died. Perhaps it was killed by a male bear – by killing cubs, a male is allowing for a survival advantage to his own cubs, by eliminating potential competitors. Or, the mother killed her own cub simply because she wants to mate with a new male.
Third, perhaps the mother killed the cub because there was not enough food for both of them to eat. Due to the climate change, it was too warm in Svalbard in August, and there were not enough seals in the water around Svalbard for the polar bears to survive.
As the mother showed some strange behaviour (she was moving around the cub for hours – as if she thought it was sleeping and she just had to wake it up), I believe, she did not kill the cub herself.
