a majestic tree, very impressive ... the branches smooth like a
beech ??? - and the leaves too make me believe that this is
    what it could be ...
    best regards,

Thankyou for your suggestion. I tended to think that the leaves were a bit long for it to be a beech tree. There are a lot of beech trees in this park - and this tree looked different. But you could be right.
When i look at a reference book - the elongated leaves of this tree resemble those of a chestnut tree. (A less likely comparator would be a hornbeam). I feel bad for not knowing. the tree ought to have a little sign on it - proclaiming - this is what i am. mark.

A wonderful tree! Reminds me of the Rumskulla Oak in Vimmerby, Sweden.

I could not identify what type of tree this was - which annoys me. I have just looked at images of the tree that you mentioned - and that is an impressive tree. Twenty years ago -  a book was published  here in britain - called "Meetings with remarkable trees" by Nicholas pakenham - in which he writes about some 20 or so ancient and celebrated trees in britain. the book has nice pictures. mark.
