Not sure what sort of camera you were shooting with, but try stepping back and zooming all the way in while focusing on the owl, (and if you can open the apature all the way), thus hopefully you can come away with a shot of this magnificent creature without the distractions of the cage and background.
centre shots are hard to get right and this could have used an offset....the cage is distracting but it looks to be very close to the bird which would have made shallow DOF difficult. Background also a bit busy..cheers..Rob

straight and tough - the cage is too prominent in what would be a very good shot. shallower dof ???
