Yellow-necked Wood Mouse

While hiking in the snow covered swamps of ‘Hohes Venn’, I spotted this little yellow-necked wood mouse crawling through the deep snow.
The yellow-necked wood mouse is very similar to the common wood mouse but differs in having a slightly longer tail, larger ears and a collar of yellowish fur, which forms a bib on the chest.

This animal does not hibernate, is active all year round but usually only at night. The specimen that I shot was so hungry in these bitter cold conditions (-10°C), that it was desperately looking for some food and didn't mind my presence.

Dutch name : Grote Bosmuis (ook Geelhalsbosmuis genoemd)
German name : Gelbhalsmaus
Latin name : Apodemus flavicollis

Location : Fagne de la Poleûr at Mont Rigi (Hohes Venn, Belgium)
