Breeding time

The great crested grebe is a graceful bird that likes to built a nest of dead plants near the riparian vegetation on freshwater lakes well hidden between the dense reed.

A female lays usually 3 to 4 eggs. Both male and female breed on the nest (23 to 25 days).

In the United Kingdom, this species was hunted almost to extinction during Victorian times in the 19th century for its head plumes, which were used to decorate hats and ladies' undergarments !
