Himalayan Prayer Flags hanging in Fan Tan Alley, Chinatown, Victoria BC
This Chinatown is the oldest on the west coast of North America.
Started after the Gold Rush in the late 1800's.
Fan Tan Alley was home to the gambling houses.
Around the turn of the century, ~1900, production of opium in Chinatown was one of BC's largest industries. It is believed more than a dozen major opium dealers had thriving businesses based in Victoria, just blocks from the NW coast's largest red light district.
