The Volvo, Lithuania's favourite for taxis because, unlike Mercedes, they don't rust, reminds me of a recent comment from an American parent who lived for a year in Sweden then returned to the States with his eight year old daughter. The reason? According to the American, Swedish schools are preoccupied with 'socialisation and play'. His primary concern was that his daughter would lose her 'mathematics and science' skills learned in the USA.Lithuanian authorities believe that 'maths and science are the future of the country.' Possibly, the US continues to languish in the 'Post-Sputnik' shock and 'The New Maths' syndrome?
Whatever the case, both the US and Lithuania are on the wrong path.
