Old Harbour of Spakenburg

Netherlands, Harbour of Spakenburg, June 2012

The name Spakenburg dates back to the 15th century. It used to be a fishing village at border of the Zuiderzee.
But when the Zuiderzee became a lake (IJselmeer), due to the construction of a 30 km long dike (the so-called Afsluitdijk),
the fishing-boats could not anymore reach the North Sea and Spakenburg ceased to be a fishing village.
Once Spakenburg had about 200 fishing-boats, today only 30 authentic boats are left which are only used for tourists.
