La placa conmemorativa indica que en esta plaza el 30 de enero 1938 cayó una bomba que provocó el derrumbe de la parte subterránea de la iglesia de Sant Felip Neri, causando la muerte a 42 civiles, incluidos 20 niños, que se refugiaban aquí . No fue, sin embargo, el bombardeo más grave en la historia de la ciudad, según el monumento conmemorativo, el terror real fue el ataque sucedido entre las 22.08 del 16 de marzo y las 15.19 del 18 de marzo de 1938.
