Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa) (1)

Mantids are carnivorous insects that feed mainly on other insect. The 2,000 species known are found mostly in tropical and subtropical countries. Mantis religiosa, also named praying mantis or European mantis, is the most common species in Europe.

The name Mantis is derived from a Greek word meaning 'prophet' or 'fortune teller'. It refers to a habitual attitude of the insect: When at rest it stands (or hangs) motionless on its four hind legs with the forelegs raised and folded in front of the head as in prayer.
