Vintage Trams, Heidelberg

Not sure if these venerable machines are still carrying passengers through the streets of old Heidelberg alongside their more modern cousins, but I’d like to think they at least still see service on fan trips.

This photo was taken on what was very much a fan-afternoon, as F-C friends Tom Reitzel and “Sandhofer” took me on an exploration of Mannheim and Heidelberg – one that was rich in tram-riding and tram-shooting experiences and even included some (unexpected!) time spent in a Heidelberg car barn and maintenance facility (*).

In the winter sunshine of this February afternoon in 2008, the pair of old gals really look to be in their “era” as they rumble past an old brick building which had also attracted my attention as a motif with its rough-hewn textures and tall chimney.(**)

It was a day for shooting with the tried and true film cameras, but also for coming to appreciate my new Canon EOS-40D, my first D-SLR, which I’d purchased for this trip. Here the 40D is viewing the scene through the EF 75-300mm IS lens, set at 125mm to make that intriguing old building a more organic part of the moment.

The photo makes its first appearance here.
