Wayang Golek Puppets

"The Wayang Golek are traditional Javanese puppets which are carved and painted by hand and dressed in traditional costumes. Wayang Golek plays are based on the Ramayana or Mahahharata stories which represent the struggle between good and evil. Often the plays are presented to appease the Gods after thanks and protection for the harvest or to exorcise evil spirits. Usually the play starts at dusk and last until the early hours of the evening.
Their bodies are dressed in three parts. Their head and neck are connected to sharpened piece of bamboo which allow the head to move from side to side. The puppeteer's hand is hidden by the sarong which hangs from the waist down."
