Elegancy in austerity

Greece
Aegean Sea
island of Nisiros

Emborios is a tiny village in the interior of the island at a height of 500 meters from sea level. It is almost deserted with not more than 25 people leaving there in winter months. And yet it's a must to visit it. In past times it was flourishing with the majority of males being captains, travelling abroad and bringing life and wealth to the place, building small but aesthetically nice looking houses having the local traditional Aegean style and decorated with splendidly polished wood as the interior of old ships was. like. The majority of these houses lie now ruined and deserted but many of them are being bought very cheaply especially by foreigners(, French, English,Germans) and reconstructed in the traditional architectural style serving as summer residencies. Some of them are also reconstructed by descendants that have for long worked abroad and come to the island for holidays.
As it happens in all Greek islands, the places is loaded with churches and the photo shows one of them elegant in its simplicity.
