Alpacas, which originally come from the South American Andes, are herd animals and feel most comfortable in groups.
They are herbivores that feed mainly on grasses.
Originally it was assumed that the ancestors of alpacas were guanacos, but today it is known that they are descended from vicuñas. For this reason, the previously used scientific name Lama pacos has been replaced by Vicugna pacos.

Alpakas, die ursprünglich aus den südamerikanischen Anden stammen, sind Herdentiere und fühlen sich in Gruppen am wohlsten.
Es sind Pflanzenfresser die sich hauptsächlich von Gräsern ernähren.
Ursprünglich nahm man an, dass die Vorfahren der Alpakas Guanakos waren, aber heute weiß man, dass sie von Vicunjas abstammen. Aus diesem Grund wurde der früher verwendete wissenschaftliche Name Lama pacos durch Vicugna pacos ersetzt.
